Simulation out May 13: A letter on the precarious thing called process

Simulation out May 13: A letter on the precarious thing called process

We are very excited to be able to release Simulation, our second LP on our label HPNG on May 13.

The release is an 8 track dark, Experimental album that deals with the theme of what reality is and looks like in a lived life, and the urge of wanting to log out from the (sometimes) simulation-like feel that life serves up - for a moment - so that the experienced, historic life has time to manifest itself in your lived identity before the next experience is thrown at you, like a bucket of cold water.

Each track has been crafted to present the listener with very different sound "realities" as if you have stepped in to a very glitchy video game where you are transported between scenario with no apparent coherence except the fact that you are trapped, and in for the ride, waiting to be portaled to the next scenario.

The writing for this album began on a trip to US and the composition work ended in 2021 in the wake of my blood clot - an serious event that left me stunned and utterly drowned in anxiety. When I began the work in 2018 a good bit after #metoo, most of my creative brain power was dealing with issues such as feminism, and the future of womanx in music/arts and life in general, now that things had been shook up at bit (or had it really? I wondered). I felt it was an exciting time, and there was a true sense of optimism that I as a musician could finally write a song without it being chewed up through the male gaze and be rid of that nagging in the back of my mind that everything that I had to say artistically could be perceived as from "from woman to man about man". I felt that my words and perspective had been liberated, somewhat (or had it?). That growing sense of  general artistic liberation also fed back in to my writing as I was growing pre-occupied with social mobility X feminism X socio economics X social injustice (e.g. brain soup stewing on this), and really just want to dive in AND expand the conversation.

Soon after recording started in 2019, I got pregnant, and boy, did things change. I didn't find myself leaning in to this motherhood topic at all, but a pregnancy  + difficult time post partum offered the perspective that life is served best with a body and mind that is fully functional. And add female + artist to the equation and see how fast the cards on your hand can crumble right in front of you.

For the first time in many years I found myself unable to find the energy, time and money to pursue anything artistic and it was heartbreaking to say the least. The worst part is that you are expected to entertain the "but look at what a beautiful child you now have" - comments whilst faced with a very challenging time in your life caused by bearing a child.

And just as I was bouncing back, I had to get a simple knee surgery which went terribly wrong and could have killed me. What didn't kill me didn't make me stronger. It didn't fuel me in any way. It really made a lot of bad things much worse and that's the "take away" which spilt into the album and sealed it creatively. Sometimes you have to just take things for what they are - also when they lack of a silver lining. Fast forward a bit to early 2021: I finished writing the album with the track "This is not you".

This album is by far the most personal thing I have ever written and created and I am truly truly thankful to those who came along for the ride with Christian and I: First and foremost to Tanja Vesterbye Jessen who has co-produced and mixed the album with us with heaps of patience and understanding.

And of course to Nils Gröndahl, Rasmus Aaen Jensen and Mads Mortensen who believed in the vision long enough to get the recordings in the box (!) on those cold December days.

Big thanks to Toke and Rasmus for the studio space and to James Plotkin for the mastering. Thanks to Bobby for the sound communication advice a long the way!

Finally a big thanks to KODA Kultur and Aarhus Kommune for the grants to make this happen financially.

ZRN to do free performance at ARoS - Aarhus Museum for Modern Art

ZRN to do free performance at ARoS - Aarhus Museum for Modern Art

With the support from guest musicians on Violin (Kathrine Kaspersen), Cello (Emma Axelson) and Percussion (Mads Mortensen), we will be premiering a concert concept name "Autopoiesis", This concept is a follow-up from their "In Tenebris" and "Slow Moon Disco" - sessions which has been performed at various locations over the past three years.

With these performances we break free from the usual rock concert conventions and focus fully on the concert experience as a sound event that turns in to music by virtue of our imagination. This means that we are performing a concert that has been designed to encompass great amounts of improvisation; letting phrases, melodies, notions of rhythm come and go like a gestalts just passing by....

With Autopoeisis we open up our little esoteric universe to try to see what the meeting of minds can foster through process. Our focus is on pure atmosphere and total sonic immersion. We will create a large canvas of colors, textures and infinities with drones, synth, strings, bass, vocal and various little devices. We will create a vast aray of details whose appearance, at the end of the day, is all down to the listener's individual perception.
